Apple's Preschool News

Apple's Preschool's staff, children, and families would like to thank the church for allowing us to continue to hold class in the fellowship hall while waiting for the furnace repairs.  We appreciate the accommodations made to ensure that the children and teachers had a warm and safe space to learn and teach.  We also thank Bill Bender for the installation of the new toilet in the classroom downstairs, the table repair, and the updates on the furnace along with Jere Reiss.  We are very grateful for everyone who helped move our supplies, toys, and furniture back down to the classroom as well.  We look forward to March with spring activities and crafts, a visit from Lucky the Leprechaun, and beginning our Reading Awareness Program.  If anyone would like to be a Mystery Reader, please contact Miss Shani at shani@rcn.com.

Check out the fun things we did at Preschool in February!

We look forward to a year filled with many new learning experiences.  For more information, click here to see our church website's Preschool tab introducing you to our teachers, school days and times, and our philosophy.

Volunteers Needed for the Fellowship Committee…The Fellowship Committee provides tasty treats for your enjoyment after worship every Sunday and is in need of additional volunteers to provide items.  Currently the number of congregational members is at a minimum and could use some help.  If you have any interest in providing an occasional snack for coffee hour, please see or get in touch with LeeAnn Malesky.  If you would like to team up with another family or a couple of people, we can work with you on doing that.  If you would like to offer your assistance on setup and or clean up, that is welcome also.  We thank all of those that have provided for us in any way with this ministry.  With thanks, Fellowship Committee.

Mr. Phil Diaz’ Music Corner

Music has always played a pivotal role in Phil's life.  Success at the PMEA District, Region and State Chorus festivals motivated Phil to pursue vocal studies at the collegiate level.  Studies at The University of The Arts, The Boston Conservatory, and East Stroudsburg University have only strengthened his musical foundation.  He has performed with the Pennsylvania Lyric Opera, Amici Opera, Boston Conservatory Opera Studio, Philly Pops, and at Northampton Community College.  Phil has extensive conducting and music directing experience having directed ensembles at The University of the Arts, Northampton Community College, Pennsylvania Youth Theatre, and Northampton Area High School.  Many of his vocal students have successfully auditioned into music programs at DeSales, Muhlenberg, Ithaca, Northwestern, The New England Conservatory and Manhattan School of Music.  Phil is a proud member of The National Association of Teachers of Singing, Lehigh Valley Arts Council, and The Nazareth Bath Regional Chamber of Commerce.  In his spare time, Phil enjoys reading, working out, and traveling.  Phil is very excited to be a part of New Jerusalem community and looks forward to a great year.

Our next book is titled Taste and See by Margaret Feinberg.  God is a foodie who wants to transform your supper into sacrament.  One of America's most beloved teachers and writers, Margaret Feinberg, goes on a remarkable journey to unearth God's perspective on food.  She writes that since the opening of creation, God, the Master Chef, seeds the world with pomegranates and passionfruit, beans and greens and tangerines.  When the Israelites wander in the desert for forty years, God, the Pastry Chef, delivers the sweet bread of heaven.  After arriving in the Promised Land, God reveals himself as Barbecue Master, delighting in meat sacrifices.  Like his Foodie Father, Jesus throws the disciples an unforgettable two-course farewell supper to be repeated until his return.  This groundbreaking book provides a culinary exploration of Scripture.  You'll descend 400 feet below ground into the frosty white caverns of a salt mine, fish on the Sea of Galilee, bake fresh matzo at Yale University, ferry to a remote island in Croatia to harvest olives, spend time with a Texas butcher known as "the meat apostle," and wander a California farm with one of the worlds premier fig farmers.  With each visit, Margaret asks, "How do you read these Scriptures, not as theologians, but in light of what you do every day?"  Their answers will forever change the way you read the Bible—and approach every meal.  Our next meeting is on Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 7:00 p.m. in the Sacristy.  Look for the signs.

Happy reading!

Serving God and Neighbor Confirmation Block 3:   During this block we will learn about the needs of our neighbors, and partner with organizations that are presently trying to meet those needs.  We give thanks for the ways that God is at work feeding the hungry, welcoming the stranger, and meeting the needs of our neighbors through these organizations, and hope that God may use us to help meet these needs, too.  We will be meeting on Sunday evenings February 10 through March 17, 2019 from 6:00–7:45 p.m. (some sessions time subject to change).

Introduction to the Bible Confirmation Block 4:  How was the Bible put together?  Who wrote it? How do we use it?  What is its purpose?  These are some of the questions we will be tackling in our time together on March 24, March 31, April 7, April 14, and May 5, 2019!  Join us from 6:00–7:45 p.m.  Locations to be determined.

Mid-Lenten Brown Bag Lunch ~ This year we will have a weekly gathering for  the season of Lent on Wednesday afternoon at New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church from 12:30–1:30 p.m. to share in a time of prayer and caring conversation about the power of God's love.  Bring your lunch and enjoy the fellowship!  We will start on March 13 through April 10, 2019.

Ways you can recognize Lent with New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church and beyond. . .

Sunday Worship:  Sunday mornings at 9:00 a.m.  We will be focusing on The Lord’s Prayer during worship.  Where’d it come from?  What's it good for?  What does it mean?  Join us in reflecting on this prayer that Jesus gifted to us.

Care to take it a step further?  Pray the Lord’s Prayer at least once a day for the season of Lent; consider using it to start your day, to finish your day, to mark a time of peace during a typically stressful time of your day, or any combination of these options.  Stay consistent.  What do you notice?

Lenten Daily Intentions:  Join us and people around the world in spending time reflecting on the Psalms of Lent through Daily Intentions.  Included in the Daily Intentions are a simple liturgy that you (and your family) can use (or customize), a psalm to read, and a daily word to reflect on and share.  Sign up online to receive them directly via email from LEAD (WaytoLead.org) or request a paper copy to be printed for you by putting your name on the sign-up sheet in the Narthex, or tell Pastor Lauren via email, call, or text!

Per the website, “Building Boxes of Food and Essentials:  “…build boxes filled with food and essentials that will be delivered to families in need across the United States.  Volunteers make our food-distribution programs possible by sorting and screening products, and helping assemble boxes loaded with much needed food and essentials.”  Please visit the website for Feed the Children at http://www.feedthechildren.org/ to learn more.
