New Jerusalem Community Food Bank
Current Needs: Canned vegetables and soup.

Food Bank Delivery: Friday, October 12th at 9:00 a.m.
Distribution Days: Saturday, October 20th and 27th from 8:45–10:45 a.m.
During the month of August, 84 families were served at New Jerusalem Food Bank. The expenses for August were $ 449.42. Income was $350.35. There is a grant from Second Harvest that is used for food. Food donations from local area churches and organizations for August are: Christ Lutheran Church-Hellertown, SV Lion’s Club, St. George’s Episcopal, Lower Saucon UCC, and St. Lukes Old William Church.

Remember when learning was fun? If you’ve forgotten when that was, a visit to Apple’s Preschool in Lower Saucon Township might remind you. The small non-denominational preschool at New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church on Apples Church Road prides itself on educating children ages 3 to 5—including pre-kindergartners—in a setting that excites young minds and encourages their curiosity. Apple's Preschool is off to a great start this new school year. We have 38 children enrolled and everyone is busy learning classroom rules and how to share and care with our new friends. Our Pre-K classes have reviewed their colors and shapes and we continue to practice our pencil control. October will be a very busy month for us with Photo Days, Fire Safety visits from firefighter Randy Yardumian, and field trips to Trauger's Farm Market, along with our every day learning activities.

There is a basket of beautiful handmade prayer shawls in the Narthex. If you know of someone who is having hard times (illness, sadness, troubles), please take one for them. These shawls are meant to show a tangible message of God's love and the care and concern of friends from New Jerusalem.

Giant Gift Card Rewards Program ~ GIANT SHOPPERS! We have been selling Giant Gift Coupons for the past year and about 10 families that support the program. To-date we have earned $820.00 of FREE MONEY from Giant to support New Jerusalem!
We would invite you to start to participate in the EASY program to earn more for the church!
Giant gift coupons are available in the Upper Room during coffee hour each Sunday. You can purchase your gift coupons with cash or a check made out to NJELC. Denominations are $100, $50, $25, and $20 cards are available immediately. If you wish to place a larger order, over $300.00, please contact or see Tina McCardle and she will see that your order can be filled properly.
We could be selling more of these coupons if you would only give it a try and get in the habit of making the gift coupon purchase prior to your food shopping trip!

Offering Checks ~ Effective January 1, 2018 all offering checks should be made out to New Jerusalem Church or NJELC. Members of Christ Lutheran will no longer have envelopes from Christ Lutheran and all offering will be going into New Jerusalem accounts. You will be given credit for your offerings, as always. 2018 Altar Flower Sign-up Sheet is located in the Narthex.
Altar flowers are a great way to honor or remember someone dear.
The cost is $35.00 or 2 people/families may share a week for $17.50/each.
The Altar Guild is in need of 46 oz. cans to put the Sunday flowers in to take them to our shut-ins.
Sing praises! The awaited day is coming with our New Music Director!
The task force that was charged with finding, interviewing, and recommending their selection for our new Music Director to the Council has prayerfully and faithfully completed its task! With Council’s approval, we have offered the position of Music Director of New Jerusalem Evangelical Lutheran Church to Phil Diaz!
Phil has many musical gifts, including the ability to lead others in song in a fun and relate-able way. We feel that he will be able to help us use our gifts so that we may praise God together. Mr. Diaz will start with us on Monday, September 24. Both he and we are looking forward to the adventures that await us all!
Be sure to join us on September 30 for worship to welcome him to our community! We are thankful to all who took the time to be part of this process, from the task force members to the applicants, and hope that God continues to see us through the remainder of this transition. Donations for Veterans ~ A shopping cart will be located in the Narthex beginning October 21st to collect non-perishable food and hygiene products for homeless Veterans of Diocese of Allentown. Examples of these items are: easy to open can goods, soups, shampoo, soap, etc. These items will be blessed at our Veteran's Service on November 11th. Pet Blessings will be held at New Jerusalem Church on Saturday, October 27, 2018 from 12:00–2:00 p.m.
Please join us for a Pet Blessing Event. Dogs, cats and other pets—small and large, furry and non-furry—all are welcome, as well as their human friends. We can't wait to meet the special members of your family. Dogs and cats will receive a treat. There will be food to purchase for lunch and free children's activities. We especially hope our Cross Training participants will attend whether or not they have a pet.

A message from Pastor Rick Brown of St. Paul United Methodist Church, Hellertown. Here is our inspiration and basis for the project: for years, Hellertown had a "Senior Lunch" around Thanksgiving hosted at Dewey Fire Company. The meal was enjoyed by many but unfortunately, like so many things, it couldn't last forever. We, however, wish to pick up the mantle of this meal and resurrect it. While we will be keeping some key elements that made this program meaningful we will be making some slight changes, such as opening it to folks other than seniors, as we know that "need" plays no favorites. Furthermore, as we seek to bring together church congregations and community organizations, let us rally around the common purpose of this project: "to feed people and create community." While the motivating force behind our involvement may differ, I am confident that we all wish our community members to be fed and in the company of people who care for them.
We happily invite you and other interested to join us for a planning meeting on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. at St. Paul United Methodist Church, 645 Main Street, Hellertown, PA 18055.
